Two things before you plan a trip.
First: this is not the Kirti Mandir in Porbandar That one is Mahatma Gandhi’s birthplace memorial, built in 1950. This one is the royal cenotaph of the Gaekwad dynasty in Vadodara, built in 1936. Same name, completely different monuments, 400 km apart. Travel sites confuse them constantly.
Second: check whether you can get inside Reports indicate access has been restricted at times during restoration work, with interior access sometimes limited to special occasions. Confirm before you travel.
With that settled Kirti Mandir Vadodara is one of the most understated buildings in Gujarat: an E-shaped stone cenotaph with a 35-metre shikhara topped by a bronze sun, moon and earth, and interiors holding murals by Nandalal Bose, one of the defining painters of modern Indian art.

Before You Go: Check Access
This is the most important practical line on the page.
What to do:
- Contact the Vadodara district tourism office or the Vadodara Municipal Corporation before travelling
- Ask specifically whether interior access is available, not just whether the site is “open”
- If interiors are closed, the exterior is still worth 20-30 minutes – the E-shaped facade, the shikhara and the bronze finial are all visible from outside
- Consider timing a visit around Diwali, when the building has been opened for exhibitions
Arriving expecting Nandalal Bose murals and finding a locked door is a genuinely common disappointment here.
Two Kirti Mandirs: Clearing Up the Confusion
Gujarat has two monuments called Kirti Mandir, and they are routinely mixed up.
| Vadodara | Porbandar | |
| What | Gaekwad dynasty cenotaph | Mahatma Gandhi memorial |
| Built | 1936 | 1950 |
| Built by | Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III | Funded by Nanjibhai Kalidas Mehta |
| Commemorates | Deceased Gaekwad rulers | Gandhi and Kasturba |
| Known for | Nandalal Bose murals, 35 m shikhara | 79-foot height, six-faith architecture |
Both names mean “Temple of Fame,” which is why the confusion persists. If you’re researching the Gandhi site, read our Kirti Mandir Porbandar guide instead.
Silver Jubilee or Diamond Jubilee? Let’s Do the Maths
Here’s a discrepancy worth getting right, because even official sources disagree.
- Gujarat Tourism and the Vadodara district website describe Kirti Mandir as built for Sayajirao Gaekwad III’s silver jubilee
- Wikipedia and several travel sources call it his Diamond Jubilee
The arithmetic settles it Sayajirao Gaekwad III came to power in 1875. Kirti Mandir was built in 1936.
- 1875 + 25 years = 1900 – that would be the silver jubilee
- 1875 + 60 years = 1935 – the diamond jubilee
1936 sits alongside the diamond jubilee, not the silver A silver jubilee commemoration built 36 years late makes no sense.
The official listings appear to carry an error. Worth noting, because if you’re writing or researching on this monument, the diamond jubilee is the defensible position.
Who Was Sayajirao Gaekwad III?
Context matters here, because Kirti Mandir is essentially his statement about his own dynasty.
Sayajirao Gaekwad III took power in 1875 and presided over what many describe as the golden era of Maratha rule in Baroda. He became a significant reformer and introduced numerous civic institutions, educational initiatives, and public buildings across the city during his reign.
Kirti Mandir was one of the many structures he commissioned, but this building turns inward. It serves neither as a palace nor a college; instead, he created it as a memorial to the ancestors who came before him.
That’s the right frame for a visit. Think of it as a royal family album carved in stone statues, photographs and cenotaphs of the Gaekwads gathered under one roof, with Shiva at the centre.
The Architecture: What to Look For
1. The E-Shaped Plan
Why it matters: The building is laid out in the shape of the letter E an unusual choice, and the detail most visitors miss entirely because you can’t read it from ground level. Terraces, balconies, domes and tombs fill out the arms.
Best for: Architecture enthusiasts
Tip: Look at a satellite view before or after your visit. The plan makes far more sense from above.
2. The Shikhara and the Bronze Finial
Why it matters: The central shikhara rises to roughly 35 metres, and its finial is the single most interesting thing on the building: a bronze composition of the sun, the moon and the earth with the earth carrying the undivided map of India. A monument completed in 1936, eleven years before Partition, showing the subcontinent whole. It reads very differently now than it did then.
Best for: Everyone
Tip: Bring a zoom lens if you want the finial in detail.
3. Indo-Saracenic Detailing
Why it matters: The building sits in the Indo-Saracenic tradition the hybrid style that dominated princely-state architecture. Look for the jharokha windows, the domes and the finials, all Indian elements executed with an eye shaped by European practice.
Best for: Heritage travellers
4. The Nandalal Bose Murals
Why it matters: This is the reason art historians come to Vadodara. The marble-finished central hall carries murals by Nandalal Bose a founding figure of the Bengal School and one of the most important Indian artists of the twentieth century. Recorded subjects include Gangavataran (the descent of the Ganga), the Life of Meera, the Battle of Mahabharata, and Natir Puja after Tagore’s dance-drama. Wikipedia records five wall paintings, described as very well preserved.
Best for: Art lovers, students
Note: These are the murals that make interior access worth chasing.
5. The Gaekwad Statues and Photographs
Why it matters: Statues and rare photographs of prominent Gaekwad family members are displayed inside the “family album” element that gives the building its character.
Best for: History readers
A Note on the Raja Ravi Varma Claim
Some sources, including Gujarat Tourism, mention rare paintings by Raja Ravi Varma at Kirti Mandir. At least one travel site goes further and wrongly credits the Mahabharata and Meera murals to Ravi Varma.
Ravi Varma did have a genuine connection to the Gaekwads of Baroda, so the presence of his paintings somewhere in the complex is plausible. But don’t go expecting the famous murals to be his and treat any page that says so as unreliable on the rest of its detail too.
How to Reach Kirti Mandir
Kirti Mandir sits in central Vadodara, near the Vishwamitri Bridge on Kirti Mandir Road / Kothi Road well inside the city and easy to reach.

- From Mumbai: approx. 400–420 km
- From Rajkot: approx. 300–320 km
Vadodara is on the Ahmedabad–Mumbai corridor, which makes it one of the easiest heritage stops in Gujarat to slot into a longer trip.
Best Time to Visit
October to March is the season, as across Gujarat.
- October–March (Winter) – Best overall. Comfortable for walking the grounds and combining with other Vadodara sights.
- July–September (Monsoon) – Atmospheric, with the Vishwamitri running. Humid.
- April–June (Summer) – Vadodara gets very hot. If you visit, go early morning or late afternoon.
Best time of day: Morning, for softer light on the stone and the shikhara. Late afternoon works well for photography too, with longer shadows across the E-shaped facade.
Special mention: Diwali the building has been opened for rangoli exhibitions on occasion, which may be your best chance at interior access.
Where to Eat in Vadodara
Vadodara has a strong, distinctive food culture that’s worth planning around.
Vadodara’s signature dishes:
- Sev usal – the city’s defining street dish, spicy and deeply local
- Lilva kachori – seasonal, made with fresh green pigeon peas in winter
- Bhakarwadi – Vadodara’s version has its own following
- Gujarati thali – several long-established thali houses across the city
Around the city centre – Simple eateries and thali restaurants within a short drive of Kirti Mandir. Roughly ₹250–500 for two.
Mandvi and the old city – The traditional street food belt, and where you should go looking for sev usal properly.
Alkapuri and Race Course area – Modern cafés and restaurants if you want air conditioning and a menu.
