A relatively easy trail with a mesmerizing view of the snow-capped ranges surrounding the trail is gaining fame among first time trekkers. The trail of the trek changes from a lush green ground with vivid exotic flowers and pine tree covers to cooler areas with frozen lakes and snow-covered path. This kind of variation is seen in very few trekking trails. This experience is available for a just three months and to grab the opportunity again you will have to wait for another year.

Itinerary

Day 1: Dehradun – Sankari

You will be picked up from Dehradun railway station and driven to Sankari. This drive is of around 10 hours and during this time you can enjoy the scenery changing from plains to the high Himalayan ranges. Dinner and overnight at hotel.  

Day 2: Sankari – Jadu-Ka-Talab

Today you will trek for around 5 hours (4 km) and gain around 3,000 feet in height. Due to the height gain you may experience heavy breathing. So walk at a normal pace and no need to hurry. Enjoy the scenery. Along the trail you will witness the beautiful pine and maple forest, ice-cold streams and at the end you will enter a beautiful meadow where you will camp at night. Dinner and overnight at campsite.

Day 3: Jadu-Ka-Talab – Kedarkantha Base

Today you trek for around 2-3 hours (4 km) and gain around 2,000 feet in height. Today’s trail mostly contains ridges, so you are required to walk with caution. Along the way you may spot shepherd’s hut where they take shelter while grazing their cattle. You will camp again at a green lush meadow land. Dinner and overnight at campsite.

Day 4: Kedarkantha Base – Kedarkantha peak – Hargaon camp

Today you ascend to the peak which is just a 1,000 feet high hike. From the summit enjoy the view and the 360 degree panoramic view of the Himalayan ranges surrounding you. Later, you will descend to the base camp and have lunch there. After that, you will descend to the Hargaon campsite. Dinner and overnight at campsite.

Day 5: Hargaon camp – Sankari

Today you will further descend to Sankari and cross a dense pine forest. Dinner and overnight at guest house.

Day 6: Sankari – Dehradun

After breakfast you will be driven back to Dehradun railway station. You will reach between 6pm and 7 pm. Book tickets for return accordingly.  

Fact

  • The temperature on day 3 and 4 can range between 10 degree Celsius to -2 degre Celsius. It is suggested that you carry winter wear and woolen accordingly for these days specially.
  • As this is a snow trek, you are advised to get snow-boots for the trek. 

How to reach

By Flight
The nearest airport is Dehradun airport and Dehradun Airport is around 30 km away from it. There are frequent flights between Dehradun and New Delhi International airport. There are taxis available from the airport to railway station.

By Train
Dehradun railway station is situated at the heart of the city and daily trains are available between Delhi and Dehradun.

By Road
Dehradun is well connected with Gaziabad in Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi via NH 58.

Do's and Dont's

Do's

• Things to Carry:

  • Backpack 40 - 60 Liters (Only carry the things required for trek)
  • Hiking/Trekking pants/trousers and shirts (Avoid using jeans and wear comfortable clothings)
  • Good ankle-length hiking shoes. Make sure your shoes are not new as they cause shoe bites easily 
  • Flash light with extra batteries (These will be required at night when you need guidance to walk along the camp site)
  • Sunglasses.
  • Hiking poles (optional) (This depends on your fitness level)
  • Sunscreen  (Get a high SPF sunscreen as sun burns are common phenomenon at high altitudes)
  • Camera (optional)
  • Water bottle
  • Warm jacket/pullover (Make sure they are water resistant)
  • Warm gloves
  • Warm socks (at least 3 pairs)
  • Raincoat
  • Prescribed medication (if any)
  • Personal Medication If Any 
  • Back Pack Cover 

Don'ts 
• Do not consume alcohol during the trek.
• Do not litter the Himalayas during your stay there.
